Reduce Your Electricity Bill with Energy Storage? Applications Open for the Home Energy Storage Program

2026.02.02.

As of today, applications can be submitted for the Home Energy Storage Program. The Ministry of Energy is offering up to HUF 2.5 million in non-repayable grants to support the installation of household energy storage systems, with the application window open until 15 March. At the same time, the eligibility criteria have been expanded, allowing a broader range of applicants to participate. Developed with the professional support of the Hungarian Battery Association, the program aims to improve the efficiency of residential solar power systems while strengthening energy independence and security of supply.

The application period for the Home Energy Storage Program officially began on 2 February 2026. Submitting an application is simple, fast, and fully online via the platform otthonienergiatarolo.neuzrt.hu.

Following an amendment to the call for applications published on 29 January 2026, the program issuer clarified that sole proprietors and primary agricultural producers are also eligible to apply, even if their registered business address is located at the residential property where the project is to be implemented. In such cases, applicants are only required to declare that no economically productive activity is carried out at the property; its function is purely administrative (e.g. registered office, site, or branch address).

Under the program, households may apply for up to HUF 2.5 million in non-repayable support for the installation of household energy storage systems. Evaluation of applications and notification of successful applicants is expected to begin in mid-March 2026.

With the launch of the application period, households that already have a solar power system (or are planning to install one) can now receive financial support to deploy an in-home energy storage system, enabling them to use the electricity they generate at a later time. Residential energy storage contributes to lower utility costs, balanced grid loads, and greater flexibility of the electricity system.

A total budget of HUF 100 billion is available under the Home Energy Storage Program, with a maximum grant of HUF 2.5 million per household, covering up to 80% of eligible investment costs. The program supports the installation of energy storage systems with a minimum capacity of 10 kWh (with a permitted technical tolerance of up to 10%), with no upper capacity limit, including related design, permitting, installation, and technical costs.

The launch of the Home Energy Storage Program marks a new phase in making residential energy use more sustainable. Through energy storage, households will not only be able to generate electricity but also to manage and use it more consciously. These developments support both household cost reduction and the more balanced operation of the electricity system, particularly in light of the expected continued expansion of solar power generation.

Applications may be submitted between 2 February and 15 March 2026 via the implementing body’s website otthonienergiatarolo.neuzrt.hu, which is also easily accessible through https://kormany.hu/otthonienergiatarolo. During the evaluation process, priority will be given to households subject to gross metering, those exiting annual net metering by 2030, and applicants living in settlements with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

The Hungarian Battery Association participated as a professional partner in the preparation of the program, contributing to the wide-scale and practical adoption of residential energy storage solutions in Hungary.
