What happens to a battery after its first life?

2026.04.24.

Last week, the Hungarian Battery Association hosted the 4th InnoBatt Meetup along with Circular Battery
Cluster, bringing together industry experts and researchers to explore the future of battery circularity.
We have been inspired by:

🎤 Péter Kaderják (Hungarian Battery • Association) - Intro
🎤 Andres Pérez (Eurecat) - Technology Centre - RECIRCULATE / BatteReverse
🎤 Emanuel Lourenço (INEGI driving science and innovation) - REINFORCE
🎤 Laszlo Szemelyi (dig-it Podcast) - Moderator

Together, we tackled one of the most urgent questions facing the sector: how can Europe unlock the full
value of batteries beyond their first life?

💡Key insights from the discussion:
🔹Hungary is rapidly becoming a major European battery hub – but recycling infrastructure is still catching up.
🔹As battery chemistries shift from NMC to LFP and sodium-ion, the economics of recycling are changing. Lower material value means new business models are needed.
🔹It's important to have flexibility due to the complexity of different battery geometries and configurations.

🔋 The Circular Battery Cluster – four EU projects working together:
REBELION EU PROJECT | REINFORCE EU-Project | RECIRCULATE | BatteReverse
These initiatives are advancing fast diagnostics, automated disassembly, safe logistics, and battery passports –
turning end-of-life batteries into new opportunities.

Hungary has the potential to lead not only in production but also in circularity. But collaboration between
industry, researchers, and policymakers will be key.

Thank you to all participants and speakers for a thought-provoking session!
